A gathering of Emergency Sevices took place on the recreation ground at the rear of the Northfleet police station during the afternoon of Saturday 20th September. There were numberous stands on crime prevention, emergency ambulances, police response vehicles and Kent Search & Rescue. The well attended event gave us the opportunity to exhibit some of the equipment we use, and to talk to people who were interested. Demonstrations were also given by police dogs, fire and rescue and police helicopter. It is hoped that a repeat Emergency Service Day will be planned for next year with even more stands and demonstrations.
SARDA Meridian a newly formed Search Dog group held there first full practice exercise on Saturday 13th September. KSAR were invited by the dog group to take part and assist in the exercise, which would help develop the side-by-side working of the two resource types. The day long scenario search planned by SARDA Meridian involved three search dog teams and 1 KSAR search team, with the search being managed by a KSAR search control team. The day ended successfully with all missing persons and items found and all resourses working well together and learning much from the experience. A good exercise Thank you SARDA Meridian.
On Saturday 6th September, members of KSAR were present at the front
of store in Somerfields
in Blackfen, and Sidcup (High Street). Dispite the wet weather the local
communities were pleased to meet us. The weather also failed to dampen
their generosity, and we were very lucky to collect much needed funds
which we help us to buy essential equipment. So a big Thanks to Sidcup
and Blackfen Somerfield, and a special thanks to the weather resistant
residents.
Staff at Thanet college enjoyed and participated in a team building day jointly organised by KSAR. Several members of KSAR gave up their time to help out on the event which proved a great success for all. The day was made even better for KSAR when members assisting on the day gave up part of their money received from the college donating it to our funds - a total of £120 (!!Huge thanks guys!!). Thank you to all who took part and KSAR members who gave up their time and money.
A big thank you to Folkestone and it's residents and all who came along to meet us today. It was a glorious day and our position in the predestrian section of Sandgate Road meant that we had the perfect spot with plenty of space to meet and talk to people (photo's in gallery). We also had a selection of our equipment on show to demonstrate. So a successful day with some possible new recruits, kind donations gained, and many more people aware of us in the county.
The sun put on a show and so did KSAR for the KSAR Annual Challenge Event on Saturday 14th June held at the Hop Farm in Paddock Wood, Kent. The day saw teams, from outside the group, compete for the challenge trophy. The 4 man teams used navigational skills to find their way around the 4km course stopping to pit their mental and physical abilities on a multitude of search & rescue related challenges. This year saw 7 challenges which tested their ability to work as a functional team and as individuals within a team, on tasks including survival skills, casualty evacuation, observation and an assault course with a difference! (Some photo's from the day in the Photo Gallery) Overall the day was enjoyed by all involved and a great success for KSAR raising PR and funds for KSAR. Watch out for next years event - can you challenge the trophy holders!!
Despite the British weather, keen people of Thanet spent time talking to our members at Westwood Cross near Broadstairs. During the day our members collected much needed and well received donations in Westwood Cross shopping Centre and Homebase as well as demonstrating our equipment at the local TA Centre. A worthwhile day with several potential new members and generous donations gained. Thank You Thanet!!
We undertook a challenge ourselves this bank holiday weekend ~ playing Search and Rescue with 40 ten and eleven year olds from Holmewood House School in Langton Green, Kent. Children were taught observation techniques and safe fire lighting, tent pitching and how to have fun playing with torches at night when they were set a challenge to find each other in the dark!! After camp fire songs and hot chocolate, the children settled into their tents ready to learn how to improvise a stretcher and carry their casualty over a tough assault course on Sunday morning. We hope they learnt some valuable skills from our team members and will be able to look after themselves and each other as they grow up. Our technique for recruitment :: get them while they're young! Another successful AGM took place at our Boxley Road centre in March with a good attendance. We elected several new managers into their new roles and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour as the year progresses. All the KSAR members are grateful to them for taking on such monumental tasks and we all give our full support to them. We are proud of our organisation and its continuing success.
