Inspired in 1981 by the search for nine year old Jimmy Beveridge in Southern California, this program was initiated by Ab Taylor to teach children how to survive in the woods if they ever become lost. Kent Search and Rescue (KSAR) has developed it further to include the urban environment calling upon their experiences of searching for young children lost in both types of landscapes.
The KSAR HUG-A-TREE program focuses on the most basic and vital survival principles and although specifically designed for children between the ages of 5 and 11, it can also be effective with slightly younger and older children. Our program is aimed at teaching several basic principles to children (and their parents) that will help ground search teams find more children in the shortest amount of time and with the least amount of discomfort to the lost child. This is achieved through an entertaining and informative presentation with activities for the children and valuable information for their parents/carers. The whole presentation can be run during a normal scout/brownie/school meeting and is just short enough to keep the children's attention, but long enough for useful information to be learnt and remembered.
